“Frankincense (also known as olibanum, Hebrew: לבונה‎ [levona], Arabic: اللبان‎ [al-libān] or Arabic: البخور‎ [al-bakhūr]) is an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes, obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia in the family Burseraceae, particularly Boswellia sacra (syn: B. bhaw-dajiana), B. carterii33, B. frereana, B. serrata (B. thurifera, Indian frankincense), and B. papyrifera. The word is from Old French franc encens (“high-quality incense”)”

Frankincense has been with us from the cleaning of the mummy’s in Egypt, to the Talmud and Torah, right through to the New Testament of the bible, the Qur’an and even between the pages of many a witch’s grimoire. The scent alone is said to produce incredible health benefits such as immune boosting properties, asthma alleviation and cancer treatment. Used topically, Oil of Frankincense is thought to prevent signs of ageing and is excellent in fading the sight of stretch marks.

In magick, Frankincense is the holy addition to most ritual incenses. It welcomes in the energetic signature of the masculine divinity and clears away negativity. It’s remarkable ability to raise energy of any space is second to none. Frankincense resin is taken internally to heal a variety of ailments, however it must be cautioned that dosages should be kept to the bare minimum as Frankincense is toxic in large doses.

Frankincense is also used as a representation for both Air and Fire, the two masculine elements. It promotes psychic awareness and is used to open the third eye chakra. It is also surmised through smaller studies that Frankincense is excellent in promoting the health of the female reproductive system.

There is a negative side to the collection of Frankincense ‘Tears’, as the resin is called once the tree is tapped to produce what we know to be Frankincense. According to research, several thousand tonnes of Frankincense is produced every year. A tapped tree will only produce seeds that germinate at 16%, an untapped tree will produce seeds that germinate at 80%. Besides our influence on the over-exploitation and rapid decline of the Frankincense tree population, there are longhorn beetles, grazing and burning of the trees that is taking place. Frankincense is a miracle to the body, mind and spirit, but it must also be treated like gold. The medical studies have a long way to prove all the scientific facts, so make sure that you do not squander this precious gift from the gods… for it is indeed a gift, medicinally and magickally.
